Karadeniz Eregli Museum

Karadeniz Ereğli Museum is located at the city center. It operates inside a building known as the Halil Paşa Mansion. This building was built by Halil Paşa Karamahmutoğlu towards the end of the 19^th century (roughly in the 1870s) who was a flag officer during the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II. Built on the foundation of an old church on Bozhane, Yalı Street; the building features ancient spol decorations collected from structures from the Roman period. It was used as a secondary school and a girls’ vocational school for a while after which it was opened to visitors in 1988 as Karadeniz Ereğli Museum. There are archaeological artifacts on the ground floor of the museum including marble tomb splints, marble capitals with figures, glass containers, jewelry, various crafts made of metals, candles and figures from the Hellenic, Roman, and Byzantine periods which were collected from Ereğli and its surroundings.

Artifacts consisting of collections such as clay amphora and coins from the Lydian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Abbasid, Umayyad, Sasanian, Artuqid, Seljuk, and Ottoman eras are exhibited on the first floor.

Local ethnographic artifacts including men’s and women’s clothes, the “elpek” fabric and yarn which is an indigenous type of weaving, weaving tools, weaving types like handkerchiefs, bundles, and cloths, weapons, seals, objects for tobacco use, prayer beads, clocks, kitchenware, measuring and weighing tools, and manuscripts are exhibited on the second floor.

The third floor is decorated according to the Ottoman period and is designed with a museum-house arrangement which respectively includes a sitting room, guest room, recreation room and a bedroom.

The museum garden has capitals from the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, shafts and plinths, various architectural pieces, tombs, and the mausoleum of the Pantomime Krispos.
