Rize Castle

It is unknown when and by whom Rize Castle, located on southwest of the city center, was established. It was used during the Byzantine and Ottoman period and constructed upon a sloping terrain. The castle consists of three parts: Inner Castle, Middle Castle, and Lower Castle. It was constructed during the reign of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian (527-565). Lower Castle: It was once surrounded by walls that expanded from the inner castle to the northeast and northwest and reached the sea. It must have been built in the 13th century. Renovation and environmental planning works have been continuing by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
